Why is UNRWA categorized under starvation?
Starvation is a severe deficiency in caloric energy intake, below the level needed to maintain an organism's life. It is the most extreme form of malnutrition. In humans, prolonged starvation can cause permanent organ damage. In Gaza, it leads to a slow-paced death.
The medical treatment of malnutrition involves providing vitamin and mineral supplements. high-energy and protein nutritional supplements – if the other treatments are not enough on their own. We're talking about food and medicines. But medicines are also needed to treat the wounded from Israeli attacks, especially those who need treatment after surgery. They would face the same ordeal as those who are suffering from malnutrition. Because the Israelis are using food and medicines as a weapon of war. That is why we view starvation in a broader context.
And why is it under the main category 'genocide I'? The Israelis are subjecting the occupied people in Gaza to such horrific submission.
In November 2023, we found a social media post from the Cyprus foreign ministry that reads the country is ready to help the Israelis. "Ready to help" caught our attention as we wanted to know how does "help" looks like. It has led to research on UNWRA.
