The unilateral withdrawal from Gaza by Israeli colonists in 2005 didn't change the status of occupation as Gaza is part of the territory of the State of Palestine, which was invaded in 1947, and grossly annexed since 1948. It is still under occupation but carries the character of ongoing annexation.
"October 7th" occurred as a full act of resistance against the years-long blockade that was part of the never-lifted Israeli occupation, again, of Gaza as part of the territory of the State of Palestine. It was fully in line with the Law of Belligerent Occupation and related UNGA resolutions.
Israelis who were or are still in captivity of Hamas cannot be claimed as 'hostages' as such is only when people are taken from their liberty and held in captivity in a country that has been living in peace. The Israelis have been in a self-declared war since 1967, and have never lifted that declaration nor signed peace with the people they are still occupying.
