What are refugee camps in Gaza suppose to be?
Refugee camps are temporary settlements designed to provide immediate shelter, protection, and assistance to individuals and families who have been forced to flee their homes due to conflict, persecution, or violence. They offer basic necessities like food, water, shelter, and medical care, but are intended as a temporary solution while refugees await a more permanent resolution, such as resettlement or return to their home country.
On November 26, 2023, the Al Maghazi refugee camp in Central Gaza, became the first camp attacked by Israelis. A Palestinian was killed, and another was injured. On December 7, 2023, the Israelis designated the Al Mawasi refugee camp, west of Rafah in Southern Gaza, as a safe zone. On January 22, 2024, the Israelis used a quadcopter to fire on the tent camp.
These two incidents were reason to start documenting all Israeli attacks on refugee tent camps in Gaza. We found out that these attacks amounts to 'Killing members of the group' as defined in the Genocide Convention
