What is ecocide?

Ecocide is the destruction of the environment by humans. It threatens all human populations that are dependent on natural resources for maintaining ecosystems and ensuring their ability to support future generations.

How does this explanation mirror in what GLOSM/PARES Documentation is doing?

We collect, document and archive developments as a result of ENDING the continuation of the existence of Palestinian life in Gaza by Israeli destruction.

While not explicitly defined as a separate crime under the Rome Statute, severe environmental damage during armed conflict can be prosecuted as a war crime. Specifically, Article 8(2)(b)(iv) of the Rome Statute addresses attacks that cause "widespread, long-term and severe damage to the natural environment".

In Gaza, ecocide is close-linked to:

  • domicide, which is a term to describe the result inflicted by completely destroying civilian areas to make these areas uninhabitable.
  • disease outbreaks by toxics, as particles of debris can be toxics swirling around into the environment even when there is a breeze.
